South Africa is home to many different animal species but perhaps the most famous are what have come to be termed "the Big Five" - lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants, and Cape buffalo.

Leopard

These reclusive animals are some of the most difficult to spot. However, keeping a lookout amongts the trees is a a good start as these felines love to climb and have been seen resting on branches of tall trees during the day.

Lion

The largest of the African cats, lions have a 'wide habitat tolerence' and can live in most environments. Unlike the reclusive leopard, lions are spociable and live in large packs.

The Rhinoceros

Rhinos are amongst some of the biggest animals in the world. South Africa contains both black and white rhino, who spend their days grazing in the country's wild savannahs.

Buffalo

Thousands of buffalo roam South African parks, these giant mammals exist in large herds, somtimes up to 500. Roaming in herds helps Buffalo to ward off predators like lions and leopards.

Elephant

Elephants are the world's largest land mammal and African elephants weigh between 5000 and 11,000 pounds. These sensitive creatures are known to hold funerals when one of their kind dies.
