Magellan: A Global Vision by Mission Structure of the V 5th Centennial of the First Voyage of Circum-NavigationThe Portuguese Task Force for the Commemorations of the V Centenary of Circumnavigation
In 1519, Magalhães, followed by 237 men and a fleet of five ships, began what would be the planet's First Voyage of Circum-Navigation, a three-year epic odyssey that forever changed the ideas that the western world had about the cosmos and geography, demonstrating, through the existence of a strait of circulation between the Atlantic and the Pacific, the intercommunicability of the oceans.
The universality of this historic milestone continues to be renewed today: Magalhães gives its name to galaxies near the Milky Way and to the space probe sent into orbit around the planet Venus.
On the occasion of the fifth centenary of his voyage, it is this man, this odyssey and this scientific and symbolic heritage that is celebrated in a digital and interactive edition that contextualizes the before, during and after the first circumnavigation.
