The Old Wellington Pub

Meet Coelina Chapman, the General Manager of The Old Wellington and learn about her experience working at the historic half-timbered city-centre pub. 

The unique character and history of the building. It dates from 1552 and it’s the oldest building of its type in Manchester and one of the oldest pubs. On the top floor we have the original beams, so you can really see the history there. 

We're based close to the cathedral, right in the heart of the city centre. We’re a short walk from Victoria Station and major attractions including The Corn Exchange, The Printworks, Manchester Arena, the Royal Exchange Theatre and the National Football Museum. We’re also a short tram or bus journey from Old Trafford and the Etihad Stadium. 

The Old Wellington hasn’t always been a pub. In the Seventeenth Century it was a draper’s shop owned by the Byrom family. And the pub wasn’t always in its current location. Following the IRA bomb of 1996, the pub was moved from its original site as part of the redevelopment of the city centre. 

Our most popular beer is the Nicholson’s Pale Ale. We serve classic British dishes. We have eight pies available and fish and chips in batter made with the Nicholson's Pale Ale. Our top-seller is currently the fish and chips. 

We have the younger generation of 21 to 22-year-olds right up to people in their seventies and the age groups mix well. We get the office workers, the residents who live in the city centre, as well tourists and people coming to watch the football. We’re also dog friendly, so people will come here and bring their dogs with them.

I’ve been in the pub trade 14 years and manager of the Old Wellington for two years. I find people are actually more sociable now than they were when I first started, and they come out to be sociable.
