After the acquisitions of contemporary art, purchases in the early years of the new millenium also returned to the nineteenth century. In 2002 came the purchase of an album of 97 drawings and gouaches by Carlo Bossoli.

In 2005 came the Collection of drawings and papers of the architect and sculptor Luigi Belli who, amongst other things, designed the monuments in Turin to Giuseppe Mazzini and to the Crimea Expedition.

Special Large-Scale Projects. Public Art
The Foundation's Articles of Statute make specific reference to the art education of the community as the primary scope of its activities. This has encouraged the Foundation to enter also into the strategic sector of the public sphere of art. In 2005 the De Fornaris organized a competition for the creation of a sculpture to symbolise the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin. Tony Cragg was unanimously proclaimed the winner.
Standing over ten metres tall, the three bronze columns are evocative of the speed and dynamism of sports contests.

In Limine
A new work was focusing on the year that would celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy. Here too, as for the Olymics previously, the idea arose to create a symbol-work which would remain for future memory. This important challenge was entrusted to Giuseppe Penone, a world-famous artist from Piedmont.

Penone designed a slanting tree in bronze, resting on marble base and accompanied by natural elements, which was to be placed in the area in front of GAM, constituting a sort of portal to the museum
