Veterinary Anatomical Museum "Alessio Lemoigne"

It collects anatomical preparations since 1845, the year of the official foundation of the Veterinary School of Parma, as a result of the Sovereign Decree of Maria Luigia n. 232 of 25 October 1845

The Veterinary Anatomical Museum

Alessio Lemoigne (Parma 5 October 1821 - Milan 27 May 1900), in 1847, was appointed coadjutor of the Royal Veterinary Institute by Duke Charles II of Bourbon, directed by Professor Pietro Del Prato. Since then, the distinguished anatomist began the collection of anatomical preparations, placed in the rooms of the S. Vitale Garden. His work was interrupted almost immediately because he was expelled from Parma by the Duke's Sovereign Decree as the protagonist of the uprisings of 1848. Only in 1854 was he able to return to service with the position of Master of Dissections. In the new headquarters of the Borgo Carissimi Veterinary School, he resumed increasing the collection. Moving to Milan, his pupil Clemente Papi continued the work of the master from 1867 to 1887, the date of his transfer to Bologna. Since then, his successors have had to deal with the historical events of Italy and with the alternating will of the rulers to keep the Veterinary School of Parma alive and vital.

The rooms of the Veterinary Anatomical Museum (VAM)

Since 1966, all the collections have been located in the current university headquarters. The VAM, thanks to the work of skilled anatomical preparers, has increased the preparations and preserved those of the nineteenth century.

Myological preparations

Many milogical preparations are the work of Lemoigne and date back to the mid-nineteenth century. In addition to the muscles, these preparations also highlight internal organs, soft parts and blood vessels. The technique involved injecting wax into large vessels and fixing the muscles with substances such as "corrosive sublimate", now replaced by formalin.

The Traveling Dog

The passion of Prof. Alessio Lemoigne (Parma 5 October 1821 - Milan 27 May 1900), for Anatomy and teaching, prompted him to prepare various preparations to be used as valid teaching aids. Among these, the wonderful "myological dog" stands out. The work, executed in 1845, was considered by contemporaries to be worthy of being sent to the London International Exhibition in April 1862.

The majestic horse

Surely the majesty and beauty of the myological statue of a horse, in a soaring attitude, with the wax injection of the vases, strike the visitor. It was built by Prof. Luigi Leroy during his stay, from 1804 to 1807, at the Veterinary School of Modena; then donated to the Veterinary Anatomical Museum of Parma in 1966.

The dangers of the trade

Years of work were required to prepare a myological statue such as that of a horse in a rearing attitude. Prof. Leroy and his collaborators built it between 1804 and 1807. From that location in 1988, following a donation, the work is housed in the VAM headquarters in Parma. A similar work required years of work and Prof. Leroy paid dearly for his passion as an Anatomist by dying in Milan in 1820 poisoned by the arsenic used for the fixation and conservation of the preparations themselves, together with the corrosive sublimate (mercury chloride ).

Osteological preparations

The VAM collects a vast collection of skeletons, natural, in which cartilages, tendons, ligaments and joints are maintained, and artificial ones, where the bones treated with solutions at the appropriate concentration and temperature, are assembled using galvanized iron or aluminum wire.
