Tehsil Dhari, India

Chitrashala is a museum of rare vintage graphics from India, dating from the turn of the nineteenth century through the twentieth century. On display in its galleries are hundreds of dazzling masterpieces of visual art heritage from the personal collection of Sumant and Asha Batra.

The stunning and curious graphics, rich and colourful in texture, offer a fascinating glimpse into the vast history of Indian mainstream popular culture and its traditional novelties. Ranging from the mythological narratives and portraits by Raja Ravi Varma and other eminent artists of the period to the numerous interpretations of the Hindu Gods in the religious calendars; from the strident melodrama of the Indian commercial cinema posters, lobby cards and film booklets to the staggering variety of match box, fabric and firecracker labels; from the narrative graphics of covers of Hindi novels and Indian comics and cartoons to allegorical outpourings of artists that created illustrations for text and religious book, the museum covers a wide range of graphic expression.
