With archives dating back 900 years, Derbyshire Record Office in Matlock is responsible for preserving the history of the city of Derby and the county of Derbyshire in the United Kingdom. Home to the Peak District National Park, and the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site, the county is famed for its beautiful landscape and its role as the cradle of the Industrial Revolution.
The Record Office is run by Derbyshire County Council and jointly funded by Derby City Council. Its collections stretch over nearly six miles of shelving and include an extensive local studies library, photographs, maps, sound recordings and documents. Every year, thousands of people visit the Record Office free of charge to find out more about the history of Derbyshire's people and places.
