The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) and CyArk, a not-for-profit that digitally records cultural sites honored the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I by photographing eight military chapels dedicated to the American military in Europe.
CyArk used advanced technology to capture the tombstones of brave soldiers at the Flanders Field American Cemetery. The images gathered create a timeless digital collection to honor the Americans who lost their lives liberating Belgium.
They captured every last detail of the tombstones and chapels at the Flanders Field American Cemetery using laser scanning, aerial drone photography, and photogrammetry distance measuring.
This commemorative project makes it possible for people to visit this WWI American cemetery in Belgium virtually. Those who can’t physically pay their respects to soldiers who lost their lives during battle can see a digital recreation of the tombstones and surroundings.
