How the Normandy American Cemetery Was Digitally Documented

Preserving the memory of D-Day

In 2018, CyArk traveled to Normandy, France to digitally capture and archive the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial for the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).

CyArk documented the site’s important structures with laser scanning.

Photos were taken of everything in a process called photogrammetry.

Images were also collected with drones.

The cemetery’s 9,380 headstones were indexed and photographed so site managers could share high quality and easily accessible photographs with loved ones and family members.

This project was part of CyArk’s work to preserve the area’s D-Day sites, the Allied-led attack on German-occupied France during World War II.
