Distrito Tec

The Public Art Program (PAP) is an initiative of DistritoTec (a project led by the Tecnológico de Monterrey University - the largest University in Mexico) that aims to create bonds within the community through artistic experiences in public spaces across the city of Monterrey, located in the north of Mexico. This project has impacted the lives of approximately 20,000 people living in the DistritoTec area.

The city

More than spectacular sunsets or fantastic views of the hills, Monterrey has urban areas that are lacking architectural attractions. Visual pollution is what prevails in the city: billboards, utility poles, electrical cables, barbed wire, and security bars that only increases the sense of insecurity.

Influence of Public Art in the City

The main goal of Distrito Tec is to enhance the streets for the community and make passerby's feel happier and safer walking around the neighborhood.

Katie Merz: a conversation with locals

Her work ranges from delicate drawings to abstract paintings and sculpture and is influenced by Brooklyn, cartoons, architecture, silence and the kinetic structure of things.  Her signature style, densely-packed glyph patterns, creates complex, non-linear narratives depicting her favorite poems to conversations she had with people passing by.

The process

The artist quickly interacts, converses and asks questions to the passerby. Both the imagination of passerby, and of the artist is activated through this conversation and interaction. Merz then draws (with white oil stick and props ) an imagined scenario around them. It is an artistic and imaginative collaboration with the general public. It involves chance and a willingness to be part of a live drawing or a large piece of public art.
