Look from The Inside
The title of the exhibition uses a quote from a poem by German Lukomnikov.
Every artist represented at the exhibition is a ceramist. The exposition has arranged a sort of dialog between ceramic masterpieces of ancient Greece, Mesopotamia, and Egypt and pieces by contemporary artists including Nikolai Filippov, Alyona Trubikhina, Andrei Demin, Andrei Pashkov, and Vladimir Shnirman, as well as collaborative works from the ‘Special Ceramics at VDNKh’ studio and the Mouseion ceramic workshop.
The #PushkinforAll exhibition, featuring drawings, artifacts, and ceramics, is taking place at the Pushkin State Museum from October 14, 2020 to January 17, 2021.

“ This is a very intimate, close-up view of artworks that had a ritualistic, sacred significance or served as a status indicator in ancient cultures. During the spring quarantine this year, artists from the Special Ceramics studio had virtual sessions in which the theme featured painted amphoras, Egyptian decorative ornaments, votive items, and dishes in the shape of animals. Drawings and ceramics were created based on the topics of these sessions and lectures on the art of antiquity. These works invite you to see the world with an inside view, outside the conventions of academia” – Evgeniya Kiseleva, exhibition curator.

“My first time at the Pushkin Museum was a long time ago when I was a child, I'm not sure how old I was. I went there with my mom. My favorite halls were the ones with all of the ancient things: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Various artists inspire me ...
For example, last year I was inspired by ‘Dancer Posing for a Photographer (Dancer in Front of the Window)’ by Edgar Degas. Then in the workshop I made a molded vase based on it.

The biggest challenge for an artist is when an order is very, very urgent and the work needs to be rushed. Even more so when you are doing difficult pieces, such as menorahs, molded vases, or a globe vase.
But just because it is difficult doesn't mean that I won't do it. I liked our exhibition at the Pushkin Museum. It’s a shame that the museum closed for the quarantine. But I hope that it will open soon. And there will be more exhibits there.”

“These artists create without fear. They simply take a piece of paper and pencil and draw. I think that many of us know the feeling of fear we had in school when facing a blank sheet of paper, not knowing how to begin drawing. That fear is not an issue for these artists.”

The Pushkin Museum has endless potential to impact its visitors. One of the first strong sparks for Andrei was his visit to the exhibition “Mimicry. Wim Delvoye” in the summer of 2014, and then the “Pre-Raphaelites” exhibition.
Our visits to these exhibits developed into graphic works. One of Andrei’s favorite pieces at the Pushkin is Henri Matisse’s “Nasturtiums with ‘The Dance II’ from 1912.”

At the ‘ Look from the Inside’ exhibition, works by adult artists from ‘ Special Ceramics’ are found alongside the best works by children from the Mouseion workshop. These works share the seriousness and sincerity of something that is seen for the first time.
