Fugitive Structures: Sway

Sway signals the traditional structure of the sukkah with its characteristics of temporality, transience and hospitality. The sukkah commemorates Israelite temporary structures which served as dwellings in their 40 year journey from slavery in Egypt to freedom in The Promised Land.

‘We wish to address issues of transience and temporality. The Fugitive Structures pavilion, like many such structures, is primarily a temporary structure and we therefore believe that it should not be built to last. Fugitive Structures is an annual series of invitation-only competitions aimed at emerging and mid-career architects who are asked to design a small-scale temporary pavilion for SCAF’s Zen garden. The series is presented in partnership with major architectural firm BVN and is intended to be an annual celebration of experimental architecture.
