Hokusai was one of the great masters of ukiyo-e printing, which means "pictures of the floating world". Artists of this school made striking, colorful prints of life in 18th and 19th century Edo.
Though the great wave takes centre stage, this is still a "view of Mount Fuji". Beyond the boats and breakers, the mountain rises, dwarfed, in the distance.
