What is the Queen Sofia Prize for Painting and Sculpture?

On January 10, 2014, the President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, José Gabriel Astudillo, proposed to approach the Extraordinary Queen Sofia Prize, which until now was included in the Autumn Hall and reserved only to members of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors.

The Queen Sofia Prize of Spainsh Association of Painters and Sculptors is one of the the first and oldest of the five prize that have the same is called in Spain: Queen Sofia Prize of the Royal Patronage on Diability, of the Ministry of Health; Queen Sofia Prize for Musical Composition of the Ferrer-Salat Foundation; Queen Sofia Prize against Drugs of CREFA and Queen Sofia Prize of Iberian Amarican of the University of Salamanca and National Patrimony.

Our institution has the honor and the privilege to have the Queen Sofia Prize since 1964. This prize was created for the Autumn Hall in that year and was born as the highest award granted in this Hall after the Medal of Honor.

It was given for the first time in the XXXV Autumn Hall in the Retiro´s Palace, atended by the Princes Mr Juan Carlos and Mrs Sofia. Her Royal Highness Princess Sofia, in gratitude, accepted the Honorary Presidency of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, being frequent from then her presence in these and other associative acts.

The honorary prize of more prestige among the associates happened to be denominated in 1980 Queen Sofia Extraordinary Prize. The award-winning artists, beyond styles and trends, together constitute a magnificent exponent of the stylistic diversity and freedom in which art has been moving since the last third of the last century until our days.

The Queen Sofia Prize For Painting and Sculpture celebrates 50 years, becoming one of the oldest in Spain and the President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, José Gabriel Astudillo, has been able to economically endow with 20.000 euros

With the important patronage of GOOGLE, the call will be open to all the artists of Spain. This will be the true triumph of art and of the founders of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors whose created the Autumn Hall and according to their own words “Art ruled by artists”.

The Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors wants to rewad creativity, passion for beauty and work at the service of human being. We want that an original work to be admired all over the world and that produces a deep emotion in those who contemplate it. And all this from the hand of this Association of Painters and Sculptors.
