The monument consists of a tower and an adjoining maintenance residence. The Lighthouse is painted white with red horizontal bands. It was first built by the British in 1871,  3 years before they established the Gold Coast Colony on 24th July, 1874 and was a symbol of their expanding colonial ambitions on the coast.

The proclamation that the former coastal protectorate was to become a crown colony was not welcomed by the indigenous people of the coast and they were not consulted about this annexation.

Exploring the interior of the lighthouse

The original lighthouse was replaced by the current one in the 1930s. The current lighthouse is 28 metres high and inside the tower there are 112 steps to reach its summit.

The summit of the tower has a lantern which is visible within a 30 kilometer radius from the sea. Its initial purpose was to guide boats to shore, but in recent times, it has also served as a cultural monument and a tourist attraction.

Climbing to the top...

There are 82 steps going up a spiral metal staircase, followed by a wooden section from which you can only descend by maneuvering backwards. At the summit, you can view the sea, the landscape of Jamestown, and its neighboring communities. The interior is currently under renovation.

From Manual generator to solar powered

A generator was used to power the Lighthouse since its renovation in the 1930s. It was ignited manually and fueled by diesel. Fifteen years ago, its use was halted. Now the lantern on top of the Jamestown Lighthouse is powered by solar panels.
