How did atoms form?

After about 380,000 years, the universe was cold enough for electrons to combine with protons or helium nuclei and form neutral atoms. Before this time, electrons wouldn’t be able to stay combined, because the radiation temperature was too high.

At this stage the universe became transparent. Light from this era can still be seen today, which is known as the cosmic microwave background radiation.
