The Gateway of India is an arch-monument in the city of Mumbai in India. It was designed by Scottish architect George Wittet at the beginning of the 20th century. The style of the monument is Indo-Saracenic, a combination of Gothic Revival with a slew of Indian and Islamic motifs. The monument measures 26 meters high with a14 meter diameter dome.

Originally built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to the city in 1911, the Gateway of India was a symbol of the British Empire in India. Completed in 1924, it has since borne witness to almost a century of development in Mumbai. The monument is now a reminder of the city’s rich colonial history and has become the unofficial icon of the city.
