There's just something about this still figure and the crosses that moved me.
To me this says what the war was about for the vast majority of men.
Very traditional view of gallantry and heroism.
This painting is from the Crimean War but I think it portrays public feelings about heroism pretty graphically. It would have informed feelings in WWI too.
Perhaps this is a bit predictable but I just love this painting.
The title says it all.
Digging underground all day and night, waiting for a cave-in, waiting for the enemy to hear you. That's courage!
The patience and gentleness of the doctors contrasted with the contorted pain of the man.
