This is the head of a gorgon which is used for architectural decoration. The function of this head was to ward of evil. The gorgons was framed by a sort of shell that is now broken away.
On this piece of pottery Herakles wrestles Triton, a fish-tailed creature. Herakles is usually appeared in Greek art in 565 B.C. This particular scene depicts naval victory by the Athenians and serves political importance to them as well
