A Prohibition against depicting representational images in religious art such as depictions of Muhammid. As well as the naturally decorative nature of Arabic script, led to the use of calligraphic decorations, which usually involved repeating geometrical patterns that expressed ideals of order and nature. It was used on religious architecture, carpets, and handwritten documents. Islamic art is focuses on spiritual essence rather than physical form.

It includes all the arts and riches of varied cultures of Islamic societies.Calligraphy and decorations of manuscripts is an important aspect but other artworks such as lamps, glass, vases, jewllery, tiles, carpets, and woodworks are all very common forms.
