The Virgin Mary is among the most commonly revered icons. The damage to the face shows a level of almost ambiguity; an incompleteness that could potentially adhere to not making the spirit flesh.
Here, John of Damascus is seen worshiping at an altar with icons. Its creation generations later, adhering to his belief, is a testament to the prominence and certain acceptance.
