The street’s decoration- Graffiti

These images have been taken from the institutions of Sao Paulo Street Art, Artmossphere Studio and Nobula. The five images I have selected to create my exhibition use a type of medium called graffiti. One of the definitions for Graffiti I found, which I thought was the least judgemental is defining Graffiti as "Drawings or inscriptions made on a wall or other surface, usually so as to be seen by the public" (The American Heritage Dictionary, 2015). I disagree with many of the definitions I came across for Graffiti. For example "Inscriptions, slogans, drawings, etc. scratched, scribbled, or drawn, often crudely, on a wall or other public surface" (Webster's New World College Dictionary, 2015). or " The definition of graffiti is writing, drawing or other marks on a wall where it does not belong" (Webster's New World College Dictionary, 2015). I chose to put these five images together because they are all a form of graffiti which uses a lot of warm tones, and has varying aspects of realism and abstractness. I chose the medium of graffiti and these five specific images to draw attention to positive forms and interpretations of graffiti. Who decides that graffiti is crude or where the display of graffiti is appropriate of not?
