While in the desert, the caravan lit fires for people to gather around and stay warm. Because of the tribal war the atmosphere is dark and is like the darkness is consuming and enveloping the fire, which is what is happening in the picture.
This picture reminds m of Santiago wandering the plains of Andalusia with his sheep in search of food and water. Santiago relied on his sheep to teach and provide wool. The sheep relied on Santiago for necessities and guidance.
