VISA 1Q98

This gallery was created by searching the term 'Justice'.  Justice, and the representation of the idea of justice as as woman, has been a subject of art and visual culture for many, many years.  In the five images here, the lady Justice is represented holding her scales, representing the weighing of arguments and evidence.  In several pictures, she is also holding a sword; signalling that in addition to judging, she also will met out the appropriate punishment. Varying materials are used in making these sculptures; marble, metal, and stone.  Some course themes that are represented include Power (that the administration of justice may include things that go against one's personal interest), Image Icon (that Lady Justice is represented similarly in all five of the samples), and perspective (viewable in the 4th image).
