For the 754 Synod, this image might have provided proof to their argument against the iconophiles as it attempts to depict Christ in the flesh as well as the mother of God which cannot be solely a depiction of the physical.
This image of the Transfiguration of Jesus is might also have been used by the iconoclasts to show how an attempt is made to show a spiritual nature of Christ on a physical medium.
Although John of Damascus argues that the icons depict the physical personae of Jesus that we may understand the flesh made whole, this icon depicts the spiritual nature of Christ at Pentecost, supporting the synod's argument.
