A Little R-N-R

This is a photo collection of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees from the past decade. These photographs are in black and white and really capture the essence of the artists. Every picture tells a story and these are no exception of the rule. This is rock and roll.

In 2015 Joan Jett & the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Joan Jett is as raw as they come, straight black hair and black eyeliner. Her shirt choice is repetitive, like the repetition of strummed power chords on a low hung guitar cranked up to 11. Her stare is direct and not only says (like her iconic song), “I love rock and roll.”, it says, “I am rock and roll.”
In 2014 Kiss was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. All of the members have unforgettable traits but none more than the “Demon”, Gene Simmons. The high contrasting black and white makeup creates positive and negative space that pulls his demonic eyes back in an unnerving manner. On the contrary his unusually long tongue projects out, salivating for blood. His pose gestures to the fans, to the Kiss Army, “You wanted the best, you got the best, the hottest band in the world, Kiss!”
In 2013 Heart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At the forefront of the band are the sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson. Ann and Nancy are a united front; Ann with her powerful vocals that rock and Nancy with her guitar chops that roll. Although their appearances are different along with their gazes, there is still a feeling of harmony.
In 2012 Guns N’ Roses was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Missing from the ceremony was their iconic front man, Axl Rose. Axl had the proverbial “singeritis”; often tardy, a no-show and other destructive behaviors which ultimately led to the breakup of the original members in 1994. This photo was taken in 1993, you get a sense of the realization that the end was near.
In 2011 Alice Cooper was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Before Kiss, onstage visual theatrics belonged to Alice. The spotlight puts in focus Alice “welcoming you to his nightmare”, asking you to be his “Frankenstein”. Even his hair screams chaos and horror is in your presence.
In 2010 Genesis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In only a handful of cases does a drummer step out of the shadows and into the limelight, Phil Collins was one of the successful few. With Phil at the helm Genesis changed from a progressive band to a pop band. In the eighties, with pop, came ballads. Even though there is a shadow cast across the image, you just know he is sitting behind a piano, an “Invisible Touch”.
In 2009 Jeff Beck was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Jeff is a true virtuoso of the guitar with a career that spans more than five decades. He is captured in this image with his signature Fender Stratocaster, a smile and a shirt with a pair of dice. The shirt says, “Let’s roll the dice and have some fun.” The look says, “People get ready.”
In 2008 John Mellencamp was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A blue jean and t-shirt Midwestern American through and through. Both his music and looks have the spirit of America’s heartland. His hand in front of his face along with looking away shows the more private nature of his character. He has always been about the music, not the limelight.
In 2007 Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Van Halen “erupted” on the music scene in 1978 with the fretboard-tapping Eddie Van Halen. To say Eddie is an iconic musician is almost an understatement. He is captured in this image with his signature Kramer Stryper, drinking a beer and his wife Valerie Bertinelli. Widely known is Eddie’s battle with alcoholism along with the ups and downs of his marriage which ended in 2007. This image has seized rock and roll stardom, vices and turmoil all in one.
In 2006 Black Sabbath was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Black Sabbath has been credited with the creation of heavy metal. Because of this front man Ozzy Osbourne is revered as the Godfather of Heavy Metal. Ozzy is seen here in that essence; upon his throne, pointing his finger, looking you in the eyes, saying, “Back in my day, fairies wore boots.”
