The Nabis were a small group of post impressionist artists who were active as a group from 1888 to 1899. The word, "Nabi" means "Prophet" in Hebrew and they had the lofty goal of expressing emotion and truth by freeing color and form from traditional restraints.

This was the painting that began the Nabis movement. It was painted with the input of Gaugin and was done on a small wooden cigar box.
