The sculpture, originally meant for the funeral momument of pope Giulius II Della Rovere, was donated to Duke Comiso I de' Medici in 1564, after Michelangelo's death, by his nephew Leonardo.
The Doni Tondo is the most famous along the very few paintings by Michelangelo, made on commission from the Florentine merchant Agnolo Doni for his wedding to Maddalena Strzzi in 1504.
This is the fist known painting by Michelangelo, described by his earliest biographers and believed to have been painted when he was twelve or thirteen years old.
