ARH3001 - Curator Project

The pieces in this Gallery are selected because they remind me of vacations and adventures I took with my wife and two young boys out West. While finding artwork from our trips I am noticing that Thomas Moran has been to a lot of places I have taken my family!

Mammoth Hot Springs was a neat and different world for me. Some areas in Yellowstone are so full of geo-thermal features, it is hard to believe we were on planet Earth. The white calcium rich deposits in this painting come through and looks life-like to anyone who has visited Yellowstone.
I really liked the depth this piece brought and its representation of Grand Canyon. We were out there in April 2010, and it was such a horrible blizzard that we couldnt see the canyon that afternoon. The next morning we woke up and did some hiking and had the most beautiful views of the canyon covered in show and mystic clouds. This piece reminds me of that trip.
While traveling in Utah we visited Kanab Canyon. Moran is terrific in capturing the scene from the most beautiful places across America.
While in Yosemite NP this past summer we attempted the impossible, take a photo of the Grizzly Giant. This is a large Sequoia tree that has to be seen to actually appreciate it. In Watkins photo, the tree still had its top. When we were out there they said that about 75yrs ago lightning struck the tree and killed the top piece off. Finding this picture and sharing it with my family is real neat!
I liked this piece for my gallery because it fits with the theme (places where I have traveled with my family). I remember traveling through Yosemite Valley on the North end of the park and looking South to see Half Dome in the distance. This piece captures the scenery in an amazing way. El Capitan is on the Left side, Bridal Veil Falls in the center and in the top in the distance is Half Dome.
I recently visited San Francisco with my family and I thought this piece was a neat representation of the city. I like the detail and massiveness of this piece.
