Nature- a necessity.

Nature is a prevalent aspect of our life found all over the world; however, civilization and human progress have taken away from its major importance. Nature, not meaning human nature and behavior or the nature of death, but rather the uncivilized nature: the nature in the wild, the animals, the trees, the earth's natural beauties- is a necessity to mankind. Appreciating the natural world's peace and harmony is indeed a calming force in life. In my own life, I know that I would be lost without nature's beauty and its opportunity of escape. Sometimes getting lost in nature, away from the "civilized", man-made world actually allows you to find yourself. For instance, enjoying a sunset or hiking through a mountain feels very liberating and allows you to look into your soul to find yourself, figure out your purpose in life, and figure out who you are and who you want to be. Being around nature definitely creates a vibe of freedom; it shuts out the stresses of life brought upon us by our own selves- humans. Nature is a calming presence that allows us to escape our fast-paced, technological, man-made world. This necessity- the admiration and awareness of nature's beauty- is a common theme that I have noticed throughout the course of this year. I hope that my gallery will successfully portray this theme and its connections to this year's course readings and films. Enjoy!

Daodejing Chapter Nineteen: "Embrace Simplicity" Chapter Twenty-five: "People model themselves on the earth. The earth models itself on heaven. Heaven models itself on the Way. The Way models itself on what is natural."
The destruction of man-made creations leaves holes in our natural world. We need to fill these holes with love and appreciation.
Remember your roots.
"Everybody gets information all day long that they lose their common sense" -Gertrude Stein I think in this fast-paced technological world we tend to get caught up in all the commotion; we need to step back for a moment and just enjoy the simple things in life, like nature's beauty.
"We have to heal our wounded world. The chaos, despair, and senseless destruction we see today are a result of the alienation that people feel from each other and their environment" -Michael Jackson
"My feet were in the water, and the river ran docilely by, and I was hardly a speck on the landscape, and I was glad" -Bartle, The Yellow Birds Bartle finds the nature at home away from war soothing; like the soldier in the painting who looks toward nature's sunset away from the turmoil of war.
"With the gazelles he grazed on grasses- his heart delighting with the beasts in the water" - Epic of Gilgamesh At the beginning of the epic, Enkidu lives in peace among the natural world. But then he becomes accustomed to the corrupt civilized world. "Enkidu had defied his body so pure- the gazelles saw Enkidu, they started to run- the beasts of the field shied away from his presence"
"Let us set to work and stop proving things, for that is the only way to make life bearable" -Candide Throughout the story of Candide, the characters face corruption, murder, suffering, and unhappiness. The only happiness they find is occupying themselves by working in a garden- away from the troubles of the world. "We must cultivate our garden"
Seek nature and look within your soul to find yourself. Daodejing- Chapter 22: "Those who are crooked will be perfected. Those who are bent will be straight. Those who are empty will be full. Those who are worn will be renewed."
Daodejing- Chapter Eleven: "But only by relying on what is not there, do we have use of the vessel." People tend to look past the emptiness within the vessel- but that is the most important part; without it, it would not work. People tend to look past nature in this increasingly man-made world- but it is the most important part; without it, our world would not work. Nature is a necessity.
"He is richest who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature" -Socrates "Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better" -Albert Einstein
So may you escape to nature when you are troubled by what is going on in your world. Go and enjoy its peace!
