Contrast and Intensity

When I saw this piece, the first thing I noticed was the mountains and the shadows. The blue coloring in the piece makes it feel cold, but it does something else I noticed right away. If you look closely, the shadows on the mountains are a darker, paler blue, which is a really good example of intensity in this color. Actually, if you look at any snowy mountain in the winter, the shadows do look blue. This contrast with the orange-white hue of the sun on the mountains also makes it look realistic, strong, and three-dimensional.
