The Renaissance

Exploring the different colors and types of paintings of the Renaissance

The name of this painting is Annunciation. In this painting, done by Leonardo da Vinci around 1472, located in The Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy there is a lot of detail. As you see every single thing worn by people in these paintings really describes themselves. As you can see in this painting , the woman on the left has wings while the woman on the right has a type of halo above her head. This could possibly mean that they are representing angels. Also the softness of the painting is really unique because it could represent tranquillity throughout the painting. Da Vinci was not just a painter he was also a scientist, musician, sculptor, mathematician, engineer, anatomist, architect, inventor, botanist, geologist, cartographer and writer.
This painting is done by Leonardo da Vinci, in the time period of 1474-78. The name of this painting is Ginevra de' Benci and is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Again like the first photo , you can really see the softness in the painting especially on her face. Leonardo da Vinci's most famous painting has to be the Mona Lisa. Many of these paintings in the Renaissance have the same type of softness to them.
The title of this painting is Giuliano de' Medici and was painted by Sandro Botticelli in 1478. This painting is also located in the National Art Museum in Washington, DC. The one big thing that stands out in this painting has to be the man's red sweater. By the plain colors around him and behind him the red color really stands out, this is called color contrast. Sandro's two best and most recognizable paintings are The Birth of Venus and Primavera.
The title of this painting is The Birth of Venus and is done by Sandro Botticelli. He painted this around 1483. This is also one of his most famous paintings. As you can see in this painting there is something extraordinary going on. Venus is being born. The detail also shows, how the water is moving and birds are flying, and in some cases it actually feels like it is actually happening because of the great detail. Also the softness of the painting makes the painting very calm. This painting is located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. Other than this painting, his other most famous piece of artwork is the Primavera.
The title of this painting is Madonna of the Goldfinch. Rafaello Sanzio painted this around 1505. This painting is located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The painting shows contrast, in how there are two young kids and then a mother. If you look at it in a certain way, you can see how the mother is not just watching her children, she is looking over them. Your eye focuses mainly on the 3 people because there isn't much going on in the background of the painting. As well as all of the other paintings, this one as well has that softness feature of the painting, to make it feel very calm. Sanzio who was born on Good Friday in 1483, learned to paint at a very early age from his father, Giovanni Santi.
The title of this painting is Saint George and the Dragon. This painting was done by Raphael in 1506 . The painting is located in The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. As you can see in this painting, Saint George is one moment away from slaying the dragon. One similar thing in all of these paintings is the trees in the background and how they are all very similar. There is a lot of emotion in this painting but while that is going on, since the painting is painted so softly , it doesn't seem so fierce and out of control. Also the horse stands out because of its bright white color and how nothing else in the photo is really the same color. While Raphael's work still remains present to this date, he died at a very young age of 37.
The name of this painting is Bacchus and Ariadne. Titian painted this around the year of 1520. This painting is quite different from the other ones in my gallery, while still having some similarities. In the other paintings in my gallery there isn't much going on, but in this one there is a lot going on. As you see many animals and people. The one similarity are the trees , which are apparent in about every single one of the paintings . Titian, at about the age of 10, was sent with his brother to Venice, Italy to start an apprenticeship with a painter, and this is when his love as a painter began. This painting is held in the National Gallery in London.
The title of this painting is The Death of Actaeon. This painting was done by Titian around 1559. This painting is different from my other ones because this is the only one that has dark gloomy colors. These types of colors really represent death because death isn't a bright event in someone's life. Even though these colors are very bland , the woman's dress stands out because it really is the one color that is different than the others. Titian the artist who painted this masterpiece actually died from the black death. This piece of artwork is held in The National Gallery in London.
The title of this painting is Mary with the Child. This piece of art was painted by Tintoretto a little before 1570. There are a few things that really stand out to me in this painting. Mary is surrounded by bright light, while the two men aren't. Also, I noticed how Mary is fully clothed while the men are partially clothed, showing power. This painting is located in The Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. A fact about Tintoretto is that his work usually consisted of muscular figures and dramatic gestures which you can see in this painting.
The title of this painting is Good Luck and was painted by Caravaggio. He painted it in the year 1594. This painting is different than the others in my gallery because it's the only painting with people wearing hats. The similarity is the bland colors of brown and black and also the softness of the painting. The painting is located in Musei Capitolini , Rome, Italy. Caravaggio died at a very young age of 38.
The title of this painting is The Three Musicians. This painting was done by Diego Velazquez. He painted this around 1616. Again as in all the other paintings I chose, there is a certain softness to the painting. The dominating color is yellow, because they only used black and yellow clothing. This painting is located in Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Velazquez was actually the leading artist in the court of King Phillip IV.
The title of this painting is Woman Holding a Balance. This painting was done by Johannes Vermeer in 1664. As the last painting of my gallery, you can see the softness that you have seen throughout my gallery. Vermeer's work usually consisted of bright colors and his favorite two favorite colors to paint with being cornflower blue and yellow. This painting is located in the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, DC.
