Print making was very important in Ancient China. There was block printing and move able printing. Block printing was invented first during the Jin Dynasty. When you block printed you first wrote down what you wanted to say on a very thin piece of paper. Then, you glued it face down on a wooden block. Lastly, you carved the characters out of wooden blocks and printed them on the wooden block. Movable printing was much faster and easier. You would make individual blocks to press onto the wooden block, then the individual blocks could be used again. These were usually made out of moistened clay. Silk was one of the greatest inventions included in the Ancient Chinese Dynasties. It was founded and created by Qin Huang's wife, Lei Zu. She raised silk worms and used their cocoons to make silk. You made the silk by boiling the cocoon in hot water, and it eventually unraveled to become a long string of silk. They, also, later started to dye silk to make patterns when they wove cloth. This technique was kept secret for hundreds of years because China knew other people would want to learn it or trade for it. Silk also enabled China to become rich because of how much people wanted it. I used the websites "Ducksters: Education Site." Ducksters: Education Site. N.p., n.d. Porcelain, also called fine china, was a very important art and export in Ancient China, especially blue and white vases. These were mainly sold to rich people in China because they were the only ones who could afford it. It was one of the earliest artworks in Ancient China. Porcelain made up everything during that time. It made up bowls, cups, tea sets, vases, jewel cases, incense burners, musical instruments, and more! Porcelain was also traded through the silk road. Bronze was a key metal for the Ancient Chinese Dynasties to have. Bronze was invented 5,000 years ago, and it is a mix of copper and tin. There is a higher degree of hardness and a lower melting point. This means that it became very hard when it was dry, almost unbreakable, and it was very thick and had almost no air trapped when it was melted. It was also very thick when it was melted. It was a good use for weapons, tools, containers, etc. This is why it was very important for the Dynasties because they had wars. I used the websites "Ducksters: Education Site." Calligraphy was an important form of art and writing. You would need a specific brush, paper, an ink stick, and an ink stone to write calligraphy. It was one of the "Four Treasures of Study." You would practice for years and years and years to be able to write calligraphy. Writing Calligraphy was very stylish and only people who were rich got to learn. There were 40,000 characters and they had to be drawn in a specific order. Everything was very precise. I used the websites "Ducksters: Education Site." Ducksters: Education Site. N.p., n.d. Painting was a way to express yourself through pictures. It was inspired by poetry and combined with calligraphy. Many paintings were sceneries like mountains, homes, birds, trees, and water. There were also three categories you could paint: landscapes, figures, or bids-and-flowers. You would paint on paper or silk. I used the websites "Ducksters: Education Site." Hair ornaments were used to keep hair in place by men or women. Women's were much more beautiful than men's though. There were many different kinds like: hairpins, hair clasps, buyaos (hairpins with pendants) and gold flowers. Wearing hairpins were a symbol of coming of age, there was usually a hair pinning ceremony for this. They were also a symbol of personal dignity. All hairpins were extremely important. Buyaos were hairpins with flower branch-shaped pendants and they constantly shook with the person's movement. These hairpins were passed down from generations. Jade was created 4,000 years ago in Ancient China. Jade was very spiritual. Rich people were buried with jade in their tombstones. It was contained with the development of religion. It was a sign of morality, grace, and dignity. The religions Taoism and Buddhism inspired jade sculptures. Some of the most popular sculptures were because of their meanings. Some of the sculptures and their meanings are a mandarin duck (love,) a deer (high official ranks,) a bat (blessing,) a lotus (holiness,) and a fan (kind acts.) My last Ancient Chinese item is pottery.I believe it is the most beautiful. It is the oldest artwork of humans because it has been around for so long. It has been 8,000 years since it was created. People created all sorts of things. They made vessels and tools. They could make any kind of tool out of pottery, but it was especially important to make things you would use in your daily life out of pottery. Although they invented it 8,000 years ago it was still a really good invention the Chinese invented. It was perfected later on though. I used the websites "Ducksters: Education Site."
