What are men to rocks and mountains? - Lauren Bell

This gallery includes works that explore the different ways artists use color, line and texture to depict mountains and forest landscapes.  I have chosen a variety of works that illustrate the different techniques used to represent an array of diverse natural scenery.

This piece depicts a beautiful view of mountains surrounded by a forest and then a field that is inhabited by both humans and animals. The mountains appear to be in the distance due to the size of the mountains in comparison to the people and the trees in the field. The detail of the grass on the ground nearest the artists point of view as well as the people, animals and trees completes the illusion that the mountains are far away. The artist uses the complementary colors of red-orange and blue-green to add contrast between the dusky sky and the mountains. The trees are all vertical lines while the mountains are diagonal adding distinction between the two elements. Although, the mountains are primarily the same blue-green the artist used texture to show that the forest extends unto the mountains.
This piece depicts a tall mountain with the green of the forest and the blue of the sky appearing behind it. The mountain is brown with white snow on the top that implies a cold climate. White clouds stand in contrast to the blue sky that darkens both below the clouds and above them. There are diagonal lines that appear to the bottom left of the piece that seem to shape an additional smaller mountain. The artist used diagonal lines to shape the mountains. The analogous colors of the sky and forest stand in contrast to the brown of the mountain. The texture of the forest helps to distinguish it as a forest by separating it from the sky.
This piece depicts a beautiful green landscape including mountains in the distance and several fields and bodies of water nearer the artists point of view. The painting primarily consists of analogous colors green and blue but includes brown, black and white to represent trees, dirt and deep water. The different colors distinguish the different elements in the piece. The softer colors of the mountains stand in contrast to the brighter and deeper colors of the surrounding forest and fields. The lines of the mountains are diagonal while the curved lines of the hill represent the natural landscape.
This piece depicts a tall mountain with trees at is base and the sea below. The dark blues and browns on the mountain and sea stand in contrast to the soft orange of the sky. Diagonal blue lines along the mountain reveal water. The curved orange lines of the sky reflecting on the sea give the water texture. The different colors used on the mountain distinguish the different elements of rock, debris and water. At the base of the mountain the brown fades into light brown sand.
This piece depicts a grey mountain landscape shrouded by mist. Small trees and a house lie at the base of the mountain below the mist. The detail of the rocky mountain makes it appear close behind the small house and trees. The image includes the muted shades of green and blue of the mountain and beige of the house and surrounding ground. Black trees and rock add contrast and texture to the piece. The black and dark grey illuminates the diagonal lines of the rock as well as the texture of the trees and natural debris.
This piece depicts a rocky mountain with a body of water below and a rolling green hill in the background. The white and blue of the clouds and sky reflect upon the body of water. The light and dark grey of the mountain and rock create shadow and stand in contrast to the brighter green of the hill and the blue of the sky. The texture and color of the hill distinguish the green trees from the beige dirt and paths on the hill. The curved line of the hill and the jagged lines of the mountain complete the diverse landscape.
This piece depicts a cobbled rocky path with a green hilly landscape and mountains in the background. The vertical line of a utility pole crosses with the horizontal lines of the telephone lines. The bright blue sky fades as it meets the soft hues of the landscape. The mountain is green at its base but changes to blue and then purple towards the top. Mist and pink tinted clouds shroud the top of the mountain. The white lines of the mountain create texture reveal the ridges of the rock. A green forest sits between the road and the mountain. Three men dressed in bright blue tunics stand on the rocky path.
This piece depicts a piece of land extending into a large body of water with mountains in the background. Rocks surround the land that is covered by trees and shrubs. The vertical lines of the trees meet the horizontal line of the land where it meets the water. The organic curved lines of the mountains reveal the ridges and detail of the rocky mountains. The Mountain closest to the artists point of view is bathed in light and includes more detail and brighter color while the mountain in the background lies in shadow and consists of darker color and less detail. The dark purple of the mountain adds contrast against the pale pink of the sky.
This piece depicts a small waterfall flowing through a dark mountainous landscape. The diagonal line of the rock flows into the curved lines of the branches and mountains in the distance. The moon sits in the sky illuminating the clouds. Thin brown diagonal lines across the sky convey wind and movement. The analogous colors green and blue of the greenery and sky blend with the grey of the rock and mountains. The color brown is used to give texture to the branches and leaves. The moonlight reflects on the water and rock adding contrast.
This piece depicts a dark forest shrouded by shadow with a hilly mountainous landscape in the background. The dark shadowed trees and field stand in contrast to the misty brown of the mountains. The blue sky and white clouds fade into the mist surrounding the mountains. The vertical lines of the trees add texture through their detailed branches. The smooth curved lines of the mountains make them appear far away due to the lack of detail. The light brown of the mountains darkens as it reaches the foothills that meet the dark trees of the forest.
