WEEK 3

DELIGHT- This picture represents typical Asian art. It is composed of soft, ink brush strokes on a scroll of paper. This piece is of a mountain range scattered with trees. There are sparse clouds in the sky and the mountain range meets a shore, possibly of a river. It is clear that the picture is based on real life landscapes but they are idealized. The artist has made them almost like a paradise. That explains why the piece is called “a dream journey to the mountains and rivers.” There is no purpose for this idealized representation of nature except for the delight of the viewer.
COMMENTARY- This art is a photographed. The lens has been adjusted so that the picture is blurry and the lights appear glaring in contrast to the darkness around them. At first glance, it is difficult to make out what any of the objects in the picture are except for the form of person. At first, I thought that it was supposed to be an alien. On closer examination, I think that it is a mannequin. The photograph is titled “A casa,” which means “a house” in Spanish. However, there does not appear to be a house in the picture. I think that the photograph is meant to be a commentary on humans and our environment; we are like blobs standing in the dark with only glaring lights visible.
WORSHIP AND RITUAL- It is obvious that this oil painting is religious in nature. It shows three priests, all wearing headresses, capes, and a scepter with their right hand placed over their heart. There are meant to picture the trinity: the father, the christ, and the holy spirit. All three figures are identical, which is meant to show the three equal, working parts of the father, the christ, and the holy spirit, as the trinity doctrine states. This piece is meant to honor God and to impress the holiness of the church on viewers. The heads underneath the priests feet represent worshipers at the feet of God.
COMMEMORATION- This photograph is of the remaining pieces of a stature of Constantine. The statues is carved from marble and was extremely large when it was intact, judging from the size of the remnants. All that is shown now is the head, a hand, and a few other fragments. The fact that a statue this grad was built for one person memorializes how important he was. It is meant to commemorate the first Christian emperor of Rome. Constantine is shown with idealized features, and was at one time much larger than human size. This shows that he was quite literally placed on a pedestal and meant to be god-like.
PERSUASION- This printed poster was probably massed produced. Its purpose is to persuade viewers to buy war savings stamps. The text in the picture calls out largely, in red, to “Boys and Girls!” It is appealing to children, and therefore parents, to achieve its end. It says to help “Uncle Sam with the war.” Naming the government Uncle Same and picturing him as patriotic man makes him seem more friendly and appealing. The call to patriotism is clear, as well. The boy and girl painted in the picture appear to be friendly with Uncle Sam, who is shown from top to bottom in all red, white, and blue. This picture is from the World War I era.
SELF EXPRESSION- This famous piece of art is from the impressionist ear. It is by one of the most famous artists of the time, Vincent van Gogh. The way the sky and the trees are depicted I'm the painting is clearly not how they actually look. Van Gogh used this piece as self expression; it is a fantastical way of picturing the sky looming over a city. The clouds are swirling and starts are huge, blazing suns lighting up the nights. A swooning, dark tree rises on the left edge of the painting, obscuring part of the sky from view. The painting is mad cup on of small pinpricks and lines of color instead of solid brush strokes, adding to its colorful, fantastical image.
