Untitled Gallery

This is a depiction of the 5 elements of Taoism (water, fire, earth, wood, metal) in harmony. According to Taoism, the 5 elements represent the activities of the Yin and Yang forces when they are alternating, manifested in the changing cycles of nature that regulate earth's life.
Although this is neihter ancient nor Asian art, it does communicate a Confucianist ideal. Lii refers to any of the secular social function of daily life, akin to the western term for culture. Confucius considered education and music as various forms of li, therefore a painting of a music lesson would accurately fall into this category.
