Personal Perspective #1
The art work I decided to write
about is The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. This painting portrays a
small town below the rolling hills of a horizon. Above this image you see a
night sky filled with swirling clouds mixed in with radiant stars and a bright
crescent moon. To the left is a huge, flame like cypress that connects the
earth and sky. I chose this work of art because of the luster I saw in it at a
young age. It was one of the first paintings I remember actually appreciating.
I believe this work of art was created to be valued. Just looking at it brings
feelings of wonder and amazement. These such feelings can be related to the way
one would look up at a starry sky as portrayed in the art work. The theme this
art work tries to incorporate, I believe, has something to do with secularity.
If you view this painting closely, you see a small town shadowed by a big
cypress tree. While the cypress tree seems to easily reach the heavens above,
the town itself, especially the church, tries to do the same, but fails. I
believe this symbolizes the triumph of nature over religion. In conclusion,
this art work not only captures your attention with bright, enchanting color in
the scenery, but it also gives you a theme that will leave you thinking. This poem
was and will always be one of my favorites.
