Nature of the 1800s (Jeffrey Willard)

My gallery is made up of great nature and landscape paintings of the 1800s. All of these oil paintings have their own unique way of showing color and light. I based my gallery on the structure of the paintings and how the artists used depth of field as well as a light source. Each painting although unique in it's own way have a lot of similarities on how the artist show depth and distance as well as how the artist used shadows to give that perfect light source.

This oil on canvas sunset painting shows great lighting, shadows and depth of field. This is a picture perfect sunset. The colors blend perfectly from dark clouds in to the bright orange sunset. The shadows on the back side of the trees show that last glimpse of light as the sun sets and shows a perfect light source. If you look in the distance to the left on the hill you can see what appears to be a house and the light reflecting off of the front. The detail in the trees in the foreground moving out to the faded dark mountain in the background gives this painting a great depth of field.
This oil on canvas nature painting has an amazing since of depth. The larger trees in the foreground and the smaller trees in the distance give it nice depth of field. The darker foreground offers that perfect light source with the background showing more light. The faded background really shows distance in this piece and mountains are used as the horizon. I love looking at paintings like this because it makes me visualize what the rest of that land looks like in my imagination.
This beautiful oil on canvas painting shows amazing detail as well as perfect depth of field. Notice the shadow in the middle to the left of the structure. This shows us exactly where the light source is coming from. The vibrant colors in the foreground shows distance as they fade in the background. This shows how our eyes focus and how colors are harder to see at a great distance. I love how the background is fading off in the horizon and the beautiful mountains sit there in the distance.
This unique oil on canvas nature painting has great color and depth. You can almost feel how the artist felt as they painted. I see the painting as a cloudy day. The colors used really help you see the depth and light of the painting. The dark trees hiding behind other trees in the distance help to show the depth as well as the light source. If you look between the branches, you can see it is a cloudy day. Although the bridge is your focal point,it seems to blend with it's surroundings and becomes part of the background.
This oil on canvas painting of nature at night uses colors and shades to show the night and depth of this piece. I love how the purples really emphasizes how the moon lights up the night. The rock in the foreground and the shadows beneath really help to give this paintings a light source as well as a great depth of field. The foreground has great clarity and the background fades into a forest. I love how this painting has depth from all dimensions.
This oil on canvas painting of haystacks shows a beautiful sunset or sunrise. I love how the painting perfectly flows from foreground to background. The darker shades under the grass as well as at the bottom of the haystacks really give this painting a perfect light source as well as a solid depth of field. The haystacks being different in size the further they go into the background really helps to see the distance of this painting. The colors in the sky from the blues to the oranges blend perfectly to give you that sunrise/sunset feel. I want to live there.
This oil on canvas painting of trees shows a great light source as well as a great depth of field. Notice that the trees in the foreground are much bigger than the trees in the background even though they are probably the same size. The branches cast shadows on the ground creating this mid-day light source. The shadows on the side of the trees as well as the structures and trees fading in the distance really give this painting a nice depth of field.
This oil on canvas painting of the countryside shows a nice depth of field as well as uses shadows to create the perfect light source. The shadow to the left in the foreground is unique. It almost seems like it could be a structure. The big shadow in the middle looks like cloud cover from above. The shadows beneath the mans feet and under the sheep shows the mid-day light source. The shadows on the mountains in the background as well as the shadows in the foreground help give this painting a nice depth of field. The sizes of the images in the foreground and the faded images in the background shows distance as well as depth. I love how the mountains sit on the horizon.
This beautiful oil on canvas lake painting shows great depth of field as well as uses beautiful colors to emphasize the season. I love how the trees and the structures reflect on the water. The smaller structures in the distance shows great depth in this painting. The darker undertones on the trees and boat shows a light source. This painting has a unique brush style but still accomplishes all aspects of dimension. The vibrant colors in the foreground and the darker undertones in the background show great distance.
This beautiful oil on canvas landscape painting shows great dimension as well as a unique light source. I love how the foreground is just grass and the subjects are put more towards the middle of the painting. Notice how the light shines just on the area where the people are and on the side of the mountains in the background. This painting has amazing dimension. The shadows in the foreground as well as in the mountains really give this piece depth. As you look far off in the distance to the right you can see mountains way off in the distance faded slightly to give this painting great depth of field.
