A collection of portraits, mostly painted, chosen based on realism, skill or charm. Portrait art is usually in modern terms only interesting for the subject and relatives, or for famed household names. Yet as humans we love nothing more than seeing another human. We even look for faces in things that have none.
Quite a few of the people here were famous themselves. But only a few of them are to any degree still mentioned, and then mostly by teachers and professors in suspicious slippers. But these paintings have survived. Both a piece of the person painted, and of the artist that did the work. Once upon a time, they lived. This is the evidence.
