A Christmas Carol

A art gallery based on Social and Economic Issues

"What's Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money"(pg.9). This quote implies that during this time the society is moving to capitalism. They are moving to a form of money/capital and starting to specialize in specific jobs. This is what allowed cities to grow quickly including New York.
"You're rich enough"(pg.9). This was a common concern with the move to capitalism was that wealth was no longer national but individual. This painting goes by the same title as the book that outlines the theory of capitalism.
"Are there no prisons." And the Union workhouses.(pg. 12)" This is the common theme of many economic and social structures. The issues of helping the poor and needy. This demonstrates the programs made to help. This shows Scrooges view of the poor well.
If they would rather die," said Scrooge, "they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population. Beside-excuse me-I don't know that.(pg. 13)" This quote and art show the common social problem of over population in the early 19th century. This also gives accurate representation of Scrooges view of the general people.
"And yet," said Scrooge, "you don't think me ill-used, when I pay a day's wages for no work.(pg.15). This shows that capitalism is in place at this time. The picture of Karl Maxx relates because he like many people believe wages are not good.
It was made when we were both poor and content so,until, in good season, we could improve our worldly fortune by our patient industry"(pg. 46). This common theme of expanding industry was a large issue of the time. All industries were trying to make more to get more money. This art show what I picture when I picture the factories in England.
It may be, that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child"(pg.65). This quote shows the issue of over population and the amount of poor people. This picture show many people all of which could be like the poor man's child.
Martha, who was a poor apprentice at a milliner's..."(pg.66). One problem that came about with capitalism was that people would become specialized in one skill. This quote shows that Martha will become a specialist in making women's hats. She will probably have few other skills. (Picture is a a milliner)
"His wealth is of no use to him. He don't do any good with it. HE don't make make himself comfortable with it. He hasn't the satisfaction of thinking.(pg. 71)" This quote shows the issue of people not using wealth wisely or effectively. This picture shows silliness and chaos of which probably cost a lot of money.
"But before that time we shall be ready with the money: and even though we were not, it would be a bad fortune indeed to find so merciless a creditor in his successor"(pg.92). This quote and art show the craziness of the time of industry with much firing and hiring there was much unemployment. The quote gives the impression that the character is out of work.
