Calligraphy would be allowed in secular art but no so much religious art. This is because calligraphy is more of a pattern to represent things rather than a religious icon. It is for the looks.
They decorate with many repetitive things such as flowers and vegetation. It is known as arabesque which is used to represent the nature of God. They also focus on patterns rather than people.
The artistic prohibition in Islamic art is that they cannot show their God, Muhammad. In Christian art, Gods and Jesus can be represented like in the image below. It shows Jesus flying down to Earth.
