The following gallery is based on paintings of Gods Archangel Saint Michael. Saint Michael is a leader and defender of all angels in the religion of Catholicism. Paintings in this gallery are from the 14th,15th and 16th century. The mediums vary from oil paint on canvas to tempera reliefs. The following gallery will show different events based on the bible that involved Saint Michael.

Saint Michael, Jaume Huguet, Around 1455-1460, From the collection of: Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya - MNAC, Barcelona
Saint Michael is the defender of Jesus Christ. In this art piece created from tempera stucco reliefs and gold leaf on wood depicted is that Saint Michael is standing on Satan and defeats him by sending him back to Hell. He is painted in a gold armor with big wings a sphere and crown on his head. At the bottom of his feet lays the defeated Satan with horns, tail, and big black wings. In the religion of Catholicism, they believe in the symbolism of the cross which is shown here in this painting. One of the principals of design in this artwork I would say is movement because of the way Satan is falling into the pit of fire.
Saint Michael Weighing Souls, Juan de la Abadía, 'The Elder', Around 1480-1495, From the collection of: Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya - MNAC, Barcelona
Saint Michael weighing souls. This art piece was created around 1480-1495. It was made from tempera, stucco reliefs, gold leaf and metal plate on wood. It is depicted that St. Michael is holding a scale which determines who shall enter Heaven or Hell. In this painting, St. Michael is wearing a gold armor red shoes and has very large wings. There is also an angel and demon on each side of the painting I would say this art piece has a principal design of balance.
Saint Michael the Archangel, Blasco de Grañén, Around 1435-1445, From the collection of: Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya - MNAC, Barcelona
Saint Michael the Archangel was created in Barcelona it is also the same medium as the last two art pieces. St. Michael is shown in silver armor with a type of sword in his hand. In this painting it seems to be that he was battling some type of demon or dragon, St. Michael seems to be very calm but strong at the same time. The principal design in this art piece emphasis and focus because the main subject noticed is the demon being defeated.
Apparition of Saint Michael at the Castle of Sant'Angelo, Jaume Huguet, Around 1455-1460, From the collection of: Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya - MNAC, Barcelona
Apparition of Saint Michael at the Castle of Sant'Angelo. St. Michael is standing at the top of the castle Sant'Angelo. He appeared to these people in this village. They all seem to be of the catholic religion because of their clothing and they seem to praying and worshipping to St. Michael. The principal design here would be unity because of the people painted very closely together and it seems to harmonize well in the painting.
Head of Saint Michael, from the Petrobelli Altarpiece, Paolo Caliari, called Paolo Veronese, 1562/1564, From the collection of: Blanton Museum of Art
Head of Saint Michael, from the Petrobelli Altarpiece. This painting is a canvas painted with oil paint. Moreover, this is a very simple piece of artwork of St. Michael, comparing it other paintings in this gallery. His face has a lot of detail it depicted that he is calm and pensive. Principal design for this art piece would be focus because the main subject is St. Michael.
The Fall of the Rebel Angels, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, 1562, From the collection of: Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
The Fall of the Rebel Angels. The medium of the painting is oak. There is a lot of movement in this piece. It is depicted that there is some sort of war between good and evil. St. Michael seems to be the main warrior because he is right in the center. The monsters seem to be falling down from the sky and the angels together with St. Michael are combating them together. This combat was inspired by the Book of Revelation from the Bible.
Altarpiece of Saint Michael the Archangel, Attributed to Joan Mates, First quarter of 15th century, From the collection of: Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya - MNAC, Barcelona
Altarpiece of Saint Michael the Archangel. This altarpiece is from the Chapel of Santa Maria de Penafel in Barcelona. Created in the 15th-century Medium is tempera on wood. The middle of this altarpiece has St. Michael in the middle fighting a three headed dragon. Above is Jesus Christ crucified and he seems to have an angel and a woman with him which I believe is the Virgin Mary. Furthermore, the left of this painting is God above with his angels and St. Michael right below battling with once again Satan. To the right of the painting, it is depicted that a bull is on top of a hill and everyone below seems to be in shock as to how the bull got on the hill. Lastly, the bottom row seems to represent the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Archangel Michael, Francisco de Zurbarán and Studio, 1598 - 1664, From the collection of: Fundación Banco Santander
The Archangel Michael. This piece took place in Madrid,Spain created between 1598-1664. Medium is oil on a canvas. The art piece is very different from the others in this gallery. The same colors are used throughout the artwork. Moreover, the wings almost fade into the background of the painting, while the main focus is on his red armor and silver shield.
The Fall of the Rebel Angels, Luca Giordano, 1660/1665, From the collection of: Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien
The Fall of the Rebel Angels is interpreted differently by this artist in the 16th century. The main focus is St. Michael. Wearing a bold blue vest with large white wings behind him he is stepping over Satan who is not interpreted as a beast but as an angel. There are many other people surrounding him which seem scared and are screaming. Principal design here would be movement.
Archangel Michael, Unknown, Middle of the 16th century, From the collection of: Monastery of St. John the Theologian, Patmos, Greece
Archangel Michael the middle of the 16th century. This is the last painting of my gallery. St. Michael is painted alone. The painter is unknown it was created in Greece. St. Michael is interpreted differently in this piece because he seems very manly and as a strong warrior. In other paintings, he appears very feminine in the face. Reds and dark browns are the main colors used. St. Michael holds a large spear and is on top of a red pillow. Principal design for this piece is focus because he is right in the middle of the portrait and is the main focus.
