Like many other works of Ligabue's late production, this painting is made with extreme attention to detail. On the right of the canvas a kite falls on the shoulders of a fox, who helplessly raises a cry of pain. The violence of the fight scene, a metaphor for human life, is matched by the serene and indifferent nature. On the far right, near the wing of the bird of prey, a butterfly flies, on the right beyond the cultivated fields you can see groups of houses and snow-capped mountains on the horizon. The artist, who generally sets the paintings with the fox as the protagonist in the countryside of the Po Valley, preferred in this case to include the mountains in the work, a distant memory of his Swiss childhood.
