A Way into a Place

For the Made by... Feito por Brasileiros exhibition, the artist created a mural of collage and painting on one of the building’s corridor walls. Having prepared the wall with a spectrum of vertical bands, Abney painted a mural of abstract figures that dance and play among colourful floating images, a reference to both the artistic fare of the 20th Century and to the formal levity of children’s art.
Nina Chanel Abney’s colourful narrative scenes create an imaginary world imbued with a politically-charged symbolism. Inspired by our celebrity-obsessed culture, she draws on issues of race and sexuality to provoke visceral reactions in the viewer.
