Archaeological human clay figurine

Archaeological human clay figurine excavated from the South African archaeological site of K2, block 4, section 12, dating approximately AD 1030 - AD 1220. The human clay figurine, is medium- sized with the torso elongated and cylindrical extending from buttock to neck. At the base of the torso, just above the buttock is an inverted V-shaped protuberance cut in two by an incised, horizontal line. The shoulders are characterised by one coiled protuberance which encircles the upper torso, just below the neck. The head is small in relation to the rest of the figure. The head resembles a squashed cylinder with flattened sides and a rounded crown. A small protuberance is apparent mid-way between forehead and chin, possibly representing a mouth. Directly attached to the torso is one buttock with upper thigh with the other buttock broken away. The buttock exhibits steatopygia features. This figurine (N294) forms part of the Mapungubwe National Heritage Collection- specifically declared as a heritage object of South Africa.
