This is one of the pieces painted in commemoration of the 2,600th anniversary of the founding of Japan and 50th year of Taikan’s painting career. The sea is brightened under the moonlight in the clear autumn air. A white wave, slowly rolling on far from the horizon, disappears into the sand. A descending plover expresses the serene nature and loneliness of autumn, emphasizing the grandeur of the sea and sky. In every work of the series Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter : Four Seasons of the Sea, in which Taikan depicted the sea in the night, he successfully differentiated the seasons without showing seasonal plants and flowers. This is a testament to his observational prowess and painting skills.
