John Cadbury founded a cocoa factory in Birmingham in 1831. In partnership with his brother Benjamin, Cadbury Brothers was appointed cocoa manufacturers to Queen Victoria in 1853. In 1879 the firm started to build a new factory at Bournville outside the city centre. The site expanded to include a model village for the health and fitness of the workers.
