Carranca is a zoomorphic or anthropomorphic talisman carved from wood, commonly used on the São Francisco riverboats until the 1940s, when it was placed on the bow of ships to protect the vessel.

  • About Creator: Ana Leopoldina dos Santos Lima was born in Ouricuri (PE), in 1923, and died in 2008, in Petrolina, in the same state. "I have calluses on my fingers, but I feel happy. It's my diploma" – a diploma Ana das Carrancas earned by overcoming the hardships of life as a potter born in Ouricuri, in the interior of Pernambuco. Now recognized and respected, her work is sui generis, since only she and her daughter make frowns out of clay; even her son-in-law makes them out of wood, like the other frown makers.
