Created by instrument maker John Frederick Newman (1783 - 1860, British), this portable mountain barometer was used by Charles Darwin (1809 – 1882, British) in his geological work during the voyage of HMS 'Beagle' (1831 – 1836). In 1899, it was presented to the Royal Society by Darwin’s executors, remaining with the Society until this day.
