Paolino Caliari (1763-1835), after a fortunate period as copyist of the old masters in Turin, returned to Verona where the upheavals of the Napoleonic era and the crisis of commissions forced him to accept even modest commissions such as decorating carriages and coffee shop signs. The painting in question, "Coffee Sign (Waiter with Four Coffees)", is an example of this phase of his artistic production.
